History

Merle Williams began experimenting with different electric cars. His Marketeer Company designed buggies for women to use at the grocery store. In 1951, the company successfully produced the very first golf cart, which was a well-received electric model. It wasn’t long before other companies entered the competitive market.

The most common characteristic of these early models was an electrically charged battery. In fact, many standard models ran on a 36-volt battery. Back then, golf carts usually had three wheels and tiller steering, which was a triangular-shaped chrome bar with rounded edges. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the vehicles underwent some major changes. During this time, these models received a fourth wheel as well as a steering wheel. By the end of the decade, golf carts began to be used off the turf.
